What a purity figure actually tells you, how we verify it, and how to read a certificate of analysis before you trust a batch.
Purity is a measurement, not a marketing word
Any supplier can print a number on a page. What makes that number meaningful is whether it came from an independent instrument, whether it is tied to the specific lot in your hand, and whether you can see the chromatogram it was derived from. A purity claim without a traceable batch reference behind it is not evidence of anything.
Reading a Certificate of Analysis
The Batch Number
First thing to check. The lot on the certificate must match the lot printed on your vial. A generic certificate that is not tied to a specific batch tells you nothing about the material you received.
The Chromatogram
A single dominant peak with a clean baseline is what you want to see. Shoulders, unresolved peaks or a noisy baseline are worth questioning regardless of the headline percentage.
Identity Confirmation
Purity says how much of the sample is one substance. It does not by itself confirm which substance. Mass spectrometry data alongside the HPLC result is what closes that gap.
